Well-designed continuous processes offer a stable manufacturing platform with the added advantages of shorter development times and more efficient manufacturing. Continuous processes typically provide energy and footprint savings while also delivering high production yields. At the heart of the continuous blending process is the loss-in-weight feeder, which delivers the ingredients to the continuous process. The weight accuracy of individual ingredients in a recipe for a continuous process, whether it is mixing/blending, milling, or extrusion, has a direct effect on product quality and bottom line savings.
This presentation will focus on 3 unique methods of improving continuous feeder accuracy:
(1) Controlling motor speeds during feeder refill
(2) Monitoring process pressure fluctuations and compensating for their effects
(3) Filtering load cell weight readings to separate out plant vibration noise from true weight loss
