The session will cover the basic approaches to size reduction – crushing, shearing and milling – explaining the differences between them, the relative advantages, and identify specific patterns of machines. It will look at open loop versus closed loop size reduction, the importance of understanding the material properties and choosing the size reduction method according to these. How particles break, and methods for modelling the size reduction processes for the purposes of predicting the effect of the machine on the input material, will be explored.
