In 2019, The Bioeconomy Initiative: Implementation Framework, a multiagency strategy for harnessing US biomass resources for biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower, was published. Given the high variability in the physical and chemical characteristics of biomass, handling and processing these feedstocks have proven to be a significant challenge to industry scale-up and deployment due to excessive downtimes caused by material handling, milling, feeding, and wear challenges. In this session, speakers from participating national laboratories and collaborating industrial partners will present their recent R&D in biomass characterization, biomass flow modeling, and correlating biomass properties with equipment wear and failure.

  • Challenges encountered in biomass handling
  • Biomass characterization and impacts on handling performance
  • Designing better biomass handling systems
  • Economic analysis of biomass handling and preprocessing systems
  • An Overview of the Feedstock-Conversion Interface Consortium (FCIC), a collaborative effort across multiple disciplines and national laboratories to quantify, understand, and manage variability in biomass supply chains, and understand how feedstock composition, structure, and behavior impacts overall system performance
