Obtaining a uniform blend of dry bulk solids is a common problem in many industries, especially pharmaceuticals, foods, chemicals. Poor blending, or the inability of maintain a blend (i.e. segregation) at the point where it is needed, is always costly in terms of rejected material, extra blending time, and defective end products. This topic is important to industry because once the mechanisms of blending are understood, they can be used to properly select blending equipment. Topics covered include:

  • Define mix or blend uniformity
  • Observe blending mechanisms and types of blends
  • Review types of blenders (ribbons, paddles, tumblers, rotary, contact-bed, tube blenders)
  • Discuss effective particle sampling techniques
