We rely on combustible dust testing to quantify hazards and design our explosion protection systems. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the igniters, some materials can be mischaracterized in the standard 20-L test. However, using a larger, cubic-meter test vessel is more representative of industrial conditions. We will discuss when using the cubic meter is appropriate for testing and explore case studies in which test results were applied to justify reductions in explosion protection from prescriptive requirements.
